The suburb only became part of the city in 1914, and before that it was considered a separate borough. Today, Grey Lynn is known for its historical architecture, as most of the houses were built between 1880 and the start of WWI, and were never replaced.

Grey Lynn Park is the primary recreational reserve in the suburb, and is the site of the Grey Lynn Park Festival, an annual independent community event. Arch Hill Scenic Reserve contains several walking tracks, and is located close to the Grey Lynn Library and the suburb’s small commercial district. The Western Springs Stadium and the Western Springs Speedway are located just over the suburb’s boundary, close to the Auckland Zoo and the Museum of Transport and Technology.
